Introduction

This guide provides instructions on how to create assignments for your students in Microsoft Teams, including managing timelines, instructions, and adding resources.

Note: The Assignments tab is only available in class teams.

Steps to Create an Assignment

  1. Navigate to the Assignments Tab:

    • Go to the General channel in the desired classroom.
    • Select Assignments.
  2. Create a New Assignment:

    • Click on Create > Assignment.
  3. Enter Assignment Details:

    • Title: Enter a title for the assignment (required).
    • Additional Information(optional):
      • Assign To: Choose multiple classes or individual students within a class.
      • Future Students: Decide if students who join this class in the future should receive this assignment. By default, only current students will receive it. To change this, select Edit next to "Don't assign students added to this class in the future," make your selection, and then select Done.
      • Instructions: Add any additional instructions for the assignment.
      • Resources: Attach resources by selecting Add resources. You can add a document from your personal OneDrive, computer, or create a blank Word, Excel, or PowerPoint document. The default setting is "Students can't edit," making the document read-only. To allow each student to edit their own copy, select More options > Students edit their own copy.
      • Due Date and Time: Set a due date and time. For more timeline options, select Edit. Here, you can customize when your assignment will be posted to students and when it will close for submissions. By default, no close date is selected, allowing students to turn in assignments late.
      • Points: Specify the number of points the assignment is worth, if any. You can use any number-based scale, including whole numbers or decimals.
      • Rubric: Select Add rubric to include a grading rubric.
      • Category: Add a category to organize assignments.
      • Turnitin Integration: Sync the assignment to Turnitin if applicable.
      • Notification Channel: Choose the channel where you'd like assignment notifications to be posted. This helps keep student work and discussions organized by unit, topic, or subject. To choose a channel, select Edit next to "Post assignment notifications to this channel." Assignments will default to posting in the General channel for new assignments.
  4. Assign the Assignment:

    • Once all details are entered, select Assign. Your students will be notified of the new assignment on the specified date, and a notification linking to the assignment will post in the selected channel.

Note: If you choose a close date, any student who joins will receive this assignment until the close date.
