Introduction

Microsoft Teams provides a variety of tools to help teachers set permissions for online lessons. This guide will walk you through how to manage permissions for students during an online lesson to ensure a smooth and secure teaching environment.

Steps to Set Permissions for Online Lessons in Teams

1. Schedule a Lesson in Teams

  • Open the Microsoft Teams application.
  • Go to the Calendar section and click on New Meeting.
  • Enter the details of the online lesson, including the title, date, and time. Add all students and other participants who need to attend the lesson.

2. Adjust Meeting Options

  • After scheduling the lesson, go to your Calendar and click on the scheduled meeting.
  • Select Meeting Options to adjust participant settings. This will open the settings in a web browser.

3. Configure Permissions

In the Meeting Options page, you can adjust several settings to manage participants:

  • Who can bypass the lobby?

    • Set this to Only me or People in my organization to ensure that students cannot join the meeting before the teacher.
  • Who can present?

    • Set this to Only me to restrict students from presenting during the lesson.
  • Allow attendees to unmute themselves?

    • Toggle this setting to Off to prevent students from unmuting themselves unless given permission.
  • Allow participants to use reactions?

    • Set this to Off to restrict students from using reactions (e.g., thumbs up, applause).
  • Allow participants to chat?

    • Set this to Disabled or Only in meeting to limit student interactions via chat during the lesson.

4. Save and Join the Lesson

  • After making the necessary changes, click Save.
  • Join the lesson as usual. The permissions you set will be active during the session.

FAQs

Yes, you can update meeting settings during the lesson. Click on the More actions (three dots) button and select Meeting options to adjust settings in real-time.

2. How can I allow a student to share their screen during the lesson?
If you set Who can present? to Only me, but want to allow a student to share their screen, click on the Participants list, find the student, and select Make a presenter.
